What is the IELTS exam?
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the most popular international English language tests. It is widely accepted by universities, institutions and employers all around the world.
IELTS rates the four basic language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. It verifies the level of English language knowledge according to a 1 to 9 scale. (9 – the best score; 1 – the worst score)
The exam consists of two variants: IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic. The General version is dedicated to people planning on moving abroad, on working or training in English-speaking countries.
The Academic version is required of people applying for Universities or academic programs.
What is the exam like?
The “reading” part of it consists of a variety of different texts such as articles, instructions, excerpts from books or advertisements, which are designed to assess the ability to understand the text and draw conclusions.
The “listening” part consists of recordings of various conversations, monologues, interviews or presentations. The tester must answer questions, fill in the gaps in the text or give short answers based on the information heard.
The “writing” part involves writing an essay or letter on a specific topic. The person taking the exam must demonstrate skills in text composition, argumentation of their views, the use of appropriate and rich vocabulary and correct grammar.
The “speaking” part involves talking to the examiner about various topics. The person taking the exam must answer the questions, present his or her opinion on a given topic and discuss the presented situations.
IELTS results are valid for two years. The final result is the average of the individual parts of the test.
